Photographs by Dorothy O'Connor
Photographer Dorothy O'Connor graduated from Georgia State University with degrees in Literature and Studio Arts. She continued her education at The Creative Circus, a commercial art school in Atlanta. Her photographs feature thoughtfully composed scenes, combining elements of still-life, portraiture and landscape to produce unique and evocative works of art.
Dorothy has contributed photographs to many group shows including those juried by renowned exhibitor Marscha Cavaliere as well as Levette Bagwell, features photo editor for the Atlanta Journal Constitution. From 2005 to 2007, her work was selected by Women In Photography International, an annual listing of the top 100 works by female photographers, juried in 2006 by Joyce Tenneson. Also in 2006, her work was included in the Jane Jackson Selects show at the Atlanta Photography Group Gallery, and the 13th annual Women In Focus exhibition, juried by Julian Cox, Curator of Photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. She began 2007 with her first solo exhibition at Composition Gallery in Atlanta, and was published in Women In Photography International's "25th Anniversary Turning Silver Print Collection." Also in 2007, Dorothy's work was chosen by Diana Edkins, Director of Exhibitions and Limited Edition Photographs at the Aperture Foundation, for the Atlanta Photography Group's annual Out of the South show, and by Julian Cox and Jane Jackson for inclusion in the Shepherd Spinal Center's permanent photography collection. In 2008, Dorothy's work was featured at the Jennifer Hunt Gallery in Birmingham, Alabama and the Anna Walker Skillman Selects exhibition at the Atlanta Photography Group Gallery, and selected by the International Color Awards of 2008 for inclusion in their "Photography Masters Cup Yearbook." Adding a new dimension to her work, in November of 2008, she premiered one of her photographic scenes as an installation open to the public. Early in 2009, her photographs were featured in the Atlanta Celebrates Photography room at ARThouse, the showcase event of the Atlanta Gallery Association's ATLart 2009, an annual event designed to bring together Atlanta's top artists and venues. In May 2009, work from her ongoing color series was included in the celebrated "Bed" show at Umbrella Arts Gallery in New York and in October of 2009, Dorothy opened her second installation as part of Atlanta Celebrates Photography 11. Most recently, images from her "Scenes" series were featured in the "Images Constructed" exhibition at the Jennifer Hunt Gallery, alongside the work of fellow photographers Julie Blackmon, David Levinthal, and Lori Nix.
