Here and Now
March 10 — April 29 2007
Featuring:
Composition Gallery is pleased to present Here and Now, our First Anniversary Show, featuring local and regional photography selected by Scholar, Curator, and Collection Consultant Susan Todd-Raque. The exhibit will begin Saturday March 10th with an Opening Reception from 7 to 10 p.m., and will continue through Sunday April 29th. Susan Todd-Raque will hold a Juror Talk on Saturday March 31st from Noon to 2 p.m.
−Ron Hughes/Composition Gallery
When Ron asked me to jury this exhibition, I was pleased to have the opportunity to see what local and regional artists are doing with photography and to bring new work to the public. As I viewed the submissions, I remembered when I was once asked about what I thought made a good photograph. My response was simple: A good photograph causes me to pause.
As a whole, the chosen images exhibit the pluralistic and paradoxical tendencies of art today. The measured quiet of Laura Griffin's work counters the energy of the blurry urban scenes by Jeani Elbaum and dynamic city perspectives of Mary Ann Mitchell. The exquisite landscapes by Diane Kirkland comfort and remind us of nature's beauty, while the meticulous soothing color of Georgia's kaolin pit mines depicted by Robin Dana attract, then, by the nature of the subject matter, repel us. In short, each of these images made me pause.
